The $2 Story: A Charity Luau

As an organization, our ties to Hawaiian culture aren’t simply geographical or based on state-issued articles. It’s not because Bethany Hamilton’s from Kauai or because we receive our mail here. It’s a little bit to do with the Hawaiian concept of Aloha, but it goes even deeper than that. We know that the deep honor, respect and companionship so native to Polynesian culture is rooted in the love and celebration of a Creator.

The mission of the Beautifully Flawed Foundation has always been to express the affection of God towards those that seek, ask and flow with the tides of life. We aim to help young men and women navigate the storms of unfathomable grief, change and loss, not only of the physical body, but of a sense of identity or even friends and family. The most outwardly evident aspect of what we do is that we serve those with limb loss and differences, yet it’s only an outward picture – the greatest impact is in the heart. What we aim to do is align those individuals, families and cultures that draw nearest to the Maker of heaven and earth – anytime that we have the opportunity to give visibility to that light, we are honored.

We might not have meant to create that sort of experience when we threw in a hula show at last year’s Charity Brew Night at Mike Hess Brewing Company in Imperial Beach, CA, but it’s certainly what it turned into.

I think that the moment I’ll recall longer than the fire dancer, longer than the emotional music or the crowd participation was a presumably homeless or disheveled man who walked up along the outer boundaries and handed me a $2 donation towards the cause. He clearly needed it more than we would gain from it and yet it was his exuberant honor to contribute towards something that he didn’t even fully understand and yet he didn’t need to.

Join Us at This Year’s Charity Luau!

The 2023 Charity Luau will be held at Mike Hess Brewing Company Imperial Beach on Saturday, April 29 from 6-9pm with no entry fees required. A family-friendly environment with community-style seating and eclectic atmosphere, we hope that you’ll join us. We hope that you’ll visit any of MHB’s six locations throughout the San Diego area anytime in the month of April and “round up” your tab as a donation towards our mission as the featured Charity of the Month – for $2, perhaps. We hope that you’ll wear the symbol of Aloha by purchasing a traditional lei for $15.

So as we relaunch this event in 2023 as the Beautifully Flawed Foundation and Mike Hess Brewing Charity Luau with all of its accompanying fundraising and festivities, it’s that $2 that comes to mind in asking our old and new patrons and participants to consider. In light of a vision beyond yourself, how far can you stretch? Can you stretch $2?
