Waking up this morning, I felt the crisp, cool air brush my cheeks. As I sipped my coffee, I sat in silent awe. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude. For a moment the world was silenced and I could take in the goodness of who God is and all He has done – a moment of bliss in a loud world. I felt fully content and grateful to have found that moment in the midst of so much busyness.

We are days away from hosting our 2nd and 3rd retreats of 2021 – I cannot believe we are actually here. In so many ways, hosting more retreats has been a dream for our small organization. Our hearts burst for the opportunity to help others because we know that hope is contagious. It summons the strength which lies deep within, calling us to get up and keep going. Sometimes it takes a community we did not know was there to get us into motion and this experience is evidence of that.

I remember the roller coaster of emotions after Bethany lost her arm. It is nearly impossible not to hurt when someone you love is in pain – suffering truly affects everyone around you! With Bethany, I saw it impact her family, and friends, and as her youth leader I remember feeling the need to be strong for her in her moments of needing comfort. This sense of strength was quickly followed by the lonely, tear-filled drives home asking God why she needed to face this hurdle. The other side of suffering is the beauty of a community and the world coming together to share encouraging words of love and hope. I remember helping sift through the thousands of letters she received, reading message after heartfelt message of how her story had touched the sender. It is in times of difficulties that we see the best of humanity and are reminded that we are more alike than we are different. We are reminded then that at our core we all have something beautiful that calls out to connect and help on another.

Those encouraging letters were part of the catalyst which drove the Hamilton family to start this organization. The hope that was shared with them lit a fire to help others going through similar things – hope is contagious, you see! All these years later we are still sharing the beauty of what it means to overcome and how such a story is available to each of us.

The thing that excites me about these retreats is the stories of those who will be in attendance. Some have very tragic stories and are fresh in their pain – months out from a traumatic event, for some. This next week they will be loved in such a special way and they will find community. They will share tears as well as laughter and together we will find healing. It’s not just them – it’s us, too. We all find the hope to overcome the challenges of this season. As they discover the strength to share their story and to change from victim into victor, so do I. As they step out of suffering into redemption, so does the leadership. As they move from tragedy to knowing their trajectory, so does the community of this organization.

Everything that will take place next week, God had in motion before each of their personal tragedies and far before that of Bethany or before mine. Hindsight brings beauty to the mess that we experience in life, changing our “why” into testimonies of courage and strength. That thought alone brings humble tears to my eye, that I get to be a small piece of His work.

We have seen so many people step up to the plate to make this financial feat possible. So many from all over the world have given what they can to make this possible. Every gift, large or small, is helping to write a story of hope for another person and increases my hope for all that we are called to do. Thank you all for being on this journey with us. Thank you for daily reminding me it is worth moving forward in faith, trusting God is faithful to provide. Thank you for bringing me back to those letters all of those years ago that awakened in me the powerful beauty of humanity. You all inspire me so much and when the days are long or the challenges come in the long months of planning, it’s all worth it. I am truly so thankful to each of you!

We are still raising those funds… we are not where we need to be, but we are moving forward and know that God will provide. This is His work and we just get to be along for the ride. If you are in a place you can be a part of that provision, we would be truly grateful. We have a giving page on our website where you can see all of the platforms available for giving. All donations are tax-deductible and will help us to continue this mission. Thank you all! May these words encourage you and remind each of you how you have had a part in the beautiful journey of the Beautifully Flawed Foundation. Please keep us in your prayers this next week. We truly appreciate it!
