“Strength of character” is my favorite definition of the word resilience. We wrapped around this theme for our Beautifully Flawed retreat in Kauai just a few weeks ago. Strength of character is built in the hard things we endure in life. Easy is not where we learn endurance! When things come easy, we often walk away with no lessons learned, or thoughts to ponder. It is in the hard things that we learn the tried and true lessons of character and of the strength we have.
I remember when the pandemic first hit, being deprived of all my comforts and of all the things that had become so easy for me, I found myself feeling anxious. I remember feeling a sense of being lost, and to some degree, as if I had lost my purpose. I know that this was true for many.
I came to a place where I had to choose to learn and rethink the hard things I felt on all sides of me. I challenged myself to take my eyes off all the discomforts I was feeling, and be vulnerable to those whose needs superseded mine. I began feeding the vastly growing homeless population, I dove deep into helping provide a safe place for youth in the community to come and I traveled to help those who were inaccessible due to the pandemic. I chose to take all the fear I was facing, and used that as strength for others. It was in those moments I learned what strength of character truly meant. It does not mean you are not afraid. It simply means you do not allow tools of fear to shape your life, instead see the greater need as most important, and you begin to worry less about yourself to the point that the uncomfortable things surrounding you dissipate.
As we neared the retreat, this was the mentality we clung too. There were so many uncertainties, we wondered at times if we could truly pull this off. Our team and board leaned into our faith and felt we were to move forward. I must say that I am so glad we did! As we had these beautiful girls arrive car-full at a time, you could sense the joy among our team who had worked so tirelessly for this moment. Once everyone was checked in, we were all ready to go! We began the retreat with our incredible medical and fitness team working with the girls and by the time we walked into our first speaking session, it already felt like we were a family.
There was a bond that took place instantaneously, something that typically takes a little time to build. It was as if we had all craved community for so long, and finally we were able to receive it. The next day the girls got to experience the truly spectacular community of our island as they came together to lovingly welcome them as Ohana (family). From the cooks in the kitchen, to a wonderful craft, being welcomed to a private pool, and finishing the day with their very own private Luau; every moment spoke of their beauty and worth. The musicians sang Hawaiian favorites, the hula dancers danced with a grace the captivated, and a smile that told each girl they were seen, and the fire dancer lit the night with awe. The hula team then taught the girls how they too could dance hula. They were all glowing.
Throughout the week, time and time again with every loving touch so many shared to make this retreat possible, there was a place of healing for each girl who attended. As they accomplished the hard things, like surfing for the first time, or the different ways of working out as an adaptive way, I saw the power of resilience at work in their lives. As they displayed their strength of character around our community, their light impacted everyone who saw them. I had so many people contact me and share how they were encouraged, both onlookers and those involved alike. Others were reminded that there is hope of normality upon the horizon, the hope that we can overcome the hard things.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 says, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” The hard things happen to all of us, but they are never there to take us out. They bring us to the end of ourselves, and often it is there that we can see the needs of others most clearly. Look for the opportunities in the difficulty, look for those who you can be a pillar of strength for. You will walk away forever changed by the difference you make for others…and that is strength of character.

We asked our girls some questions about their experience of the retreat and here’s what they shared with us:
“Even though we have different experiences, we are able to understand and relate in many ways. I love to hear when a girl says “me too,” because most of the time the people in their lives truly don’t understand what that person is going through, but when they come to the retreat they have people who truly understand. I love that we challenge and support each other mentally, physically and spiritually. I love seeing how this retreat can be life changing to many of the girls and myself.”

“Getting up on that board and riding the waves was a feeling I will never forget. I felt so accomplished and so free from every worry I have ever had. Seeing every other girl surfing also opened my eyes so much to just how much we can accomplish when we set our minds to something. Any time anyone fell, they immediately got right back up on the board to try again and I think that surfing example represents our resilient lives perfectly.”

“The retreat is the only place I feel as though I can be myself. It’s also the only place I feel like I’m home with family. Leaving this group of girls really breaks my heart but I am beyond thankful for the blessing they are. This retreat saved my life and I could never repay that.”
