“A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.”
There’s something special in the air this time of year. Many may say it’s the festive decorations, the Christmas songs playing in the stores, or perhaps the traditions we share with those we love; all wonderful things, but none of them the REASON, the why behind it all. Yet, as we pause and look at a timeless and powerful carol “O Holy Night” that we all know and sing, there’s one line that stands out, pointing to the true answer — “a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.” How simple, yet so profoundly powerful. The reason to why “the weary world rejoices,” is none other than a tangible, graspable, realized Hope.
Unlike any other time of year, it’s in this Christmas and New Year season, we see all peoples from all corners of the earth experience this undeniable sense of hope, joy, eager expectation, and selfless generosity, despite the circumstances they may be currently facing or in light of the hardships they’ve even encountered throughout the year. The world is enraptured by this “thrill of Hope.” And whether they know it or not, this Hope has a name, and His name is Jesus. Jesus, the epitome of what our human hearts long for and crave, this is the real reason why we are overcome with celebration, merriment, infectious hope and sacrificial love this time of year. Because it was Jesus, the Son of God, who came down to earth in the most humble of ways as a baby, for the sole purpose of bringing HOPE to a weary, broken, and hopeless world by giving His very life for all of humanity. This is why we experience the abounding “thrill of hope” and the selfless display of giving like no other time of year. Jesus was and is the reason for it all, the perfect representation as to why we have Hope and why we give.
