The surf scene might seem void of seasons. The ever temperate climate that categorizes the lifestyle seems as perpetually warm as the lifestyle that accompanies it. It just looks easy. What we have done with the Beautifully Flawed Foundation is to demonstrate and honor the reality that life often strikes us in the blows of deep winter too, and that the endurance and overcoming of these dark moments are what identify the true rise and fall of our atmosphere. Springtime resembles this sense of hope best of all and we’re as here to celebrate it as much as those who are watching the snowfall melt away.
Spring is, quite literally, the season of new beginnings – flowers are in bloom, animals come out of hibernation, and the warmth of the sun touches the soil to nourish life. The shift of the earth displays what human nature itself is capable of – to come back to life, even after death. None other manifests this narrative more deeply than the story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The celebration of Easter keeps us grounded in the greatest hope of all. In this story we know that the ultimate battle has already been won on our behalf. And furthermore, we can understand that we are called to participate in a similar resurrection in our own life – that we get to come back to life too. In the sense of eternity, we will celebrate this truth in heaven. But even in the finite sense of human existence, this is a pattern that we get to live as many times as our years will call us to strengthen through.
Every human will face the experience of death and some experience it more than once. We personally know and serve a group of people that arguably face this before the grave at a depth that most others will never grasp, let alone be equipped to handle. The dying of self-identity that comes from losing a limb might be one of the most painful of all, as it causes one to lose all that they think they are. Yet the real Easter story reminds us that death is not an end, as much as we may grieve and wrestle it to be. Death, in relationship with the Creator of the universe, is actually just the beginning. And oh, how we celebrate that!
The Beautifully Flawed Foundation and the retreats that we host are precisely how we embody this truth. Through practices of healthy and active living, we endeavor to help young men and women who face limb difference restore life where they may still see only death. We eagerly reach for individuals buried in the graves of despair and encourage them to walk through the garden of grace. We join with the heavens to push aside the stone that opens the door from darkness to light!
He is risen and today we celebrate that, knowing that the event of Easter is what allows us to rise back up too.
April is Limb Loss Awareness Month!
Did you know that more than 2 million Americans live with limb loss or limb difference, and more than 28 million are at risk of amputation surgery. Approximately 185,000 amputations occur in the United States each year. We love being a part of this community of resilient people and so that’s the theme we are going to celebrate this month – RESILIENCE! You may have read Sarah Hill’s letter last month articulating this character quality, so this month in honor of Limb Loss Awareness Month we are highlighting stories that embody this principle.
